Shigeya Kondo

Biography of Shigeya Kondo

Shigeya Kondo graduated BSc from the University in 1909. He was born as the first child of Renpei Kondo, the president of Nippon Yusen Kaisha Line.

Kondo came to Glasgow in 1904, where he studied at the Royal Technical College for a year, before enrolling at the University of Glasgow in 1905. He took classes in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Naval Architecture and Analytical Geometry, graduating BSc in 1909.

Upon his return to Japan, Kondo was appointed engineer of Tokyo Tetsudo (Tokyo Railway), and in 1926 he became the managing director of Yokohama Shipyard. He later established the Sanko Spinning Company. Kondo set up the Kondo Marine Memorial Foundation at his own expense, which has encouraged public-interest activities for the development of marine transportation and maritime culture since 1915.
