Donald Murdo Macleod was the eldest of three brothers that would attend the University of Glasgow. He was born to Scottish immigrants Donald Macleod, a minister, and Annie Macleod in Winnipeg, in March 1915.

Macleod enrolled at the University in 1934 at the age of 19 to study Arts. He received both the Carnegie Trust Grant and the Education Authority Grant for the years 1934-37, and was awarded a class prize in Celtic in 1937. Donald graduated MA in November 1938, and remained in Scotland where he lived with his brothers, Malcolm and John, in Glasgow and later in Dingwall, where they worked as teachers.
