Biography of Robert Jack

Robert Barr Jack (1928- ) is a graduate of the University who was Professor of Mercantile Law from 1978 to 1993. He was made DUniv in 2001.

Jack graduated from the University MA (1948) and LLB (1951). He became a partner in the law firm McGrigor, Donald & Co in 1957 and retained his position in the company when he was appointed to the University Chair, becoming Senior partner from 1990 to 1993.

Among many public offices, Jack was a Member of the Scottish Law Commission (1974-1977), the Takeover Panel (1992 to 2001) and the Financial Law Panel (1993 to 2001). He held several company directorships, in firms such as Joseph Dunn (Bottlers), Gartmore Scotland Investment Trust and Scottish Metropolitan property, and he was also involved with charitable and other bodies such as the Board of Governors of the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research and the Football Trust. He was awarded a CBE in 1988.
