Biography of John Johnstoun
John Johnstoun was Regius Professor of the Practice of Medicine at the University, 1714 to 1749.
The Chair was re-founded and endowed by Queen Anne in 1713. Johnstoun, a graduate of the University of Utrecht who was practising as a physician in Glasgow, was appointed on 1 June the following year. According to the University's historian James Coutts, Johnstoun neglected his teaching duties. In October 1749 he agreed to demit office in favour of William Cullen, retaining his house at the College for life.
