Biography of Dr Arthur Kennedy

Arthur C. Kennedy (1922-2009) was a graduate of the University and appointed to the Muirhead Chair of Medicine in 1979.

Arthur attended Whitehill School in Glasgow, before studying medicine at the University of Glasgow. He graduated MB with commendation in 1945 and later with an MD in 1956, with the thesis entitled: Defective gas transport function of stored red blood cells: with observations on the oxygen dissociation curve in anaemia.

From the study of clinical haematology, he went on to develop expertise in the field of renal medicine from 1958, following the acquisition of a rotating-drum artificial kidney machine by Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where he was appointed Senior Lecturer in Medicine. An early pioneer of dialysis, Arthur became leader of the dialysis team of the Royal Infirmary in 1959.

In 1969 he was awarded a personal chair by Glasgow University before being appointed to the Muirhead Chair of Medicine. Following this, he was president of the Royal Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow from 1986 until his retirement in 1988. He died in 2009.
