Joseph McCulloch graduated MB ChB from the University in 1914. He was born in Philadelphia, USA, on 28 March 1892.

McCulloch resided in Ayr at the time of his enrollment at the University in 1909, aged 17, to study Medicine. He was awarded several academic prizes; a second-class certificate in Professor T K Monroe's Practice of Medicine, and a second-class certificate in the summer session of 1914 for his performance in Operative Surgery under Professor Robert Kennedy. He graduated MB ChB on 15 August 1914.

During the First World War, he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps with the rank of Captain.
