James Williamson
Biography of James Williamson
James Williamson (d 1795) was Professor of Mathematics from 1761 until his death in 1795.
Williamson matriculated at the University in 1742 and studied Mathematics under Professor Robert Simson, before becoming a minister in Wamphry and then Closeburn. When Simson resigned his Chair in 1761, he nominated Williamson as his successor.
In January 1789, Williamson proposed, successfully, that James Millar, son of John, the Professor of Law, should be appointed his assistant and successor, assuming all his teaching duties. He continued to be a member of the Faculty, to live in his College house and draw his salary until his death five years later.
