William Kerr was born on the 12th of July 1891 in Kirkmuirhill, Lanarkshire. His father was Robert Kerr, a minister of the United Free Church of Scotland. Kerr first matriculated at the University in 1909 to study for an MA. He took subjects such as Greek, Logic and Natural Philosophy, and won prizes in both Mathematics and Logic. Kerr graduated on the 18th of June 1912, and began his second degree at the University soon after. He became a student of Medicine, graduating MBChB in 1917. William also excelled at this degree, earning prizes in Systematic Embryology, as well as a medal and a first class certificate in Physiology and Practical Physiology.

After finishing his medical degree, Kerr then served with the forces in East Africa. In 1919 he went into medical partnership with Dr E. R. Porter at a practise based in Swansea. He then went on to receive a higher degree in medicine from the University, graduating MD in 1921. Between the wars Kerr worked with the Territorial Army and was appointed lieutenant-colonel as commanding officer of the 158th Welsh Field Company. He also served as the assistant director of medical services in the 53rd Welsh Division. Kerr was later appointed work abroad, managing a mixed hospital in Egypt. His work was mentioned in dispatches. He continued to serve in the Territorial Army after the wars and was appointed honorary colonel and awarded the Territorial Decoration with four bars.

Kerr remained in Swansea after the war, taking an active interest in medical affairs. He was a past chairman of the local division of the British Medical Association, chairman of the local medical committee and one of the founders of the Royal College of General Practitioners. He passed away on the 13th of May 1974, aged 82.
