John Couper
Biography of John Couper
John Couper (1794-1855) was an alumnus of the University and Regius Professor of Materia Medica from 1833 until his death.
Born in Glasgow, Couper matriculated to study at the University in 1808 and was awarded the degree of MD by the University of Edinburgh in 1816. He was a surgeon at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 1824.
During his time at the University, Couper lobbied the Faculty unsuccessfully to attach a salary to his Chair.
