Biography of James Clow

James Clow (d 1788) was Professor of Logic and Rhetoric at the University from 1752 until 1787. He was elected Clerk of Senate twice and was a Vice-Rector during his time in the Chair.

Clow studied at the University, graduating MA in 1731, and was a tutor to the children of the Earl of Galloway. He received the thanks of the University in 1761 for investigating and putting in order the accounts of bursary foundations and other financial matters. In 1774 George Jardine was appointed Clow's assistant and successor, with the latter continuing to receive his salary, occupy his house at the Old College and act as an administrator. He finally resigned his Chair in February 1787, shortly before his death.
