Biography of John Maitland Forsyth
John Maitland Forsyth graduated MB from the University in 1912.
He was born at Ching-Chou-Fu in the Shandong province of China, son of Robert Coventry Forsyth, a missionary at Tainanfu, northern China.
Upon the outbreak of the First World War, Forsyth served as Battalion Medical Officer to the Cheshire Regiment and temporary captain of the Royal Army Medical Corps until he was badly gassed in the spring of 1918. His war service was recognised as he received the Military Cross and bar.
In 1920, Forsyth went to Singapore to join Dr Galloway in practice. Forsyth also served as representative for the British Medical Association on the Medical Council of the Straits Settlements and Federated Malay states.
He died suddenly of septic fever at the age of 32, and was buried at Bidadari Cemetery, Singapore.
