Grace Jeanie Bell was a graduate of the University of Glasgow.

She was born on 3rd March 1890 in Hull, the daughter of Scottish parents, Jane and Rev. James Bell.

She attended Hillhead School and enrolled at the University of Glasgow in 1908, when she was 18 years old. In her first year at the university, Grace was signed up for classes in Latin and Mathematics. She graduated with an MA in 1912.

Grace subsequently obtained a teaching diploma from the University of Cambridge and, in 1917, moved to South Africa to teach at a high school in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape. She met and married William Brownlee Kirkpatrick, a Dundee-born dentist, and the couple lived in Grahamstown until 1926. They then returned to the UK and set up a dental practice in Sevenoaks, Kent. The couple had three children.

After her husband’s death in 1954, Grace moved to London, where she could be closer to her daughter.

Grace died on 12 June 1974 and is buried at Hurst Green, Lancashire.
