Biography of Tom Campbell

Thomas (Tom) Douglas Campbell was a graduate of the University who was Professor of Jurisprudence from 1979 until 1990.

Campbell graduated MA from the University in 1962, with first class honours in Mental Philosophy. He went to Balliol College, Oxford as a Snell Exhibitioner and Ferguson Scholar, graduating BA in Theology in 1964, and returned to Glasgow to lecture in Social and Political Philosophy in the Department of Politics. In 1973, Campbell was appointed Professor of Philosophy at the University of Stirling.

The University awarded Campbell a PhD in 1969 for his thesis "Adam Smith and the Sociology of Morals". His research interests lay primarily in the Scottish Enlightenment and issues in moral and legal philosophy.

Campbell left the University in 1990 and joined the Faculty of Law at the Australian National University where he was Professor of Law until 2001. During his time at the Faculty, he was Dean of Law from 1994 until 1997. He specialised in the areas of Philosophy of Law, Justice, Rights, Business and Professional Ethics and Adam Smith.

Campbell was a Professorial Fellow at the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics, Charles Sturt University, Canberra.

He died in July 2019.
