George Ross

Biography of George Ross

George Ross, or Rosse (d 1754) was Professor of Humanity from 1735 until his death.

Ross possessed an MA degree when, in 1735, he succeeded to the Chair which had previously been held by his father, Andrew. Ross Snr insisted that he continue to receive the salary from the Chair after his retirement, and so George earned only the sums he received from student fees. The Faculty became so concerned about the Professor's circumstances, that in 1746 it voted to pay him an allowance of 400 Merks Scots during his father's lifetime.
