James Young

Biography of James Young

James Young was a regent at the University who was described as Professor of Humanity, and held the office from 1683 until 1687. He was also the University Librarian. In 1687 he demitted office as professor, and made his brother Librarian in his place.

The Humanity class was suppressed for several years while the Faculty attempted to raise revenues to support it. When Young tried later to claim for arrears of pay, the request was refused on the grounds that the Library had suffered damage due to his negligence.
