Francis Caird
Biography of Francis Caird
Francis Irvine Caird was David Cargill Professor of Geriatric Medicine from 1979 to 1994.
After graduating BA in Animal Physiology from New College, Oxford (1950), Caird became a clinical scholar at the Radcliffe Infirmary and graduated MB, BCh in 1953. He completed his National Service as a Clinical Officer in Medicine and Junior Specialist, and then held a number of hospital posts. He was awarded a DM by the University of Oxford in 1960 for his work on the diagnosis and progress of aspects of cardiac valvular disease in the elderly.
Caird returned to the Radcliffe in 1961 as Senior Medical Registrar and he was subsequently a medical tutor at the Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine. He came to Glasgow in 1967 as Senior Lecturer in Geriatric Medicine and Honorary Consultant Physician in Geriatric Medicine at Stobhill Hospital. He was appointed Reader in 1975.
