Biography of W Arthur Harland

William Arthur Harland (1926-1985) was Regius Professor of Forensic Medicine at the University, 1974 to 1985. He was Dean of the Faculty of Law, 1980 to 1983.

A graduate of Queen's University, Belfast (MB, BCh, 1948 and MD 1974), Harland worked in hospitals in the USA, Canada and the Caribbean before gaining his PhD from the University of London and coming to Glasgow in 1964 as Pathologist at the MRC Atheroma Research Unit at the Western Infirmary. He was appointed Senior Lecturer in Pathology at the University in 1966.

During his tenure of the Regius Chair, Harland was recognised as an authority on thyroid diseases and on atherosclerosis. As one one of Britain's leading experts in Forensic Medicine, he was an expert witness in many trials for murder and other serious offences.
