Biography of Matthew Charteris
Matthew Charteris (1840-1897) was Regius Professor of Materia Medica at the University from 1880 until 1897.
Born in Dumfries, Charteris graduated MD from the University of Edinburgh in 1863. He entered private practice and was a visiting physician at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, 1874 to 1883, and Professor of Medicine at Anderson's College, 1876 to 1880.
Charteris wrote Practice of Medicine, a text book which appeared in seven editions.
