Biography of Professor Bryan Richards

Bryan Edward Richards was Mechan Professor of Aeronautics and Fuel Mechanics from 1980-2006, and subsequently Emeritus Professor and Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Aerospace Engineering.

After attending Queen Mary College (now the Queen Mary University of London), he joined the Bristol Aircraft Company, whose research and development work resulted in Concorde. He then joined Imperial College London, and then in 1967 moved to the Von Karman Institute in Belgium to set up a High Enthalpy Laboratory.

He was appointed to the Mechan Chair of Engineering at the University of Glasgow in January 1980. His research activities included unsteady trans/supersonic flows, flight mechanics and flow control of fixed wing and rotor aircraft. He retired in 2006 and held the post of Emeritus Professor and Honorary Senior Research fellow until he passed away suddenly on 30th October 2017.
