Joseph Goodwin Tomkinson graduated from the University MB in 1901 and MD in 1903. He was raised in Cheshire, the son of a colliery proprietor.

Tomkinson first matriculated at the University in 1897 to study medicine, aged 28. After graduating he began to specialise in dermatology, which he studied further in Paris and Berlin. Upon his return to Glasgow in 1908, Tomkinson was appointed Medical Electrician at the Western Infirmary, a newly created role. He became well known as a dermatologist, having expert knowledge of both radiology and of the skin. In 1928 he became Visiting Dermatologist, and was promoted again in 1934 to Honorary Consulting Dermatologist. He remained in this position until he retired.

An enthusiastic teacher of his subject, Goodwin-Tomkinson held the first post of Dermatology at the Anderson College of Medicine, and later that of McCall Anderson Memorial Lecturer on Dermatology in the University of Glasgow.
