Mabel Stewart was born 17th December 1887 and graduated MA in 1908. She was born in Glasgow, daughter of John Stewart, a measurer.

She enrolled at the University in 1906 to study for an Arts degree, taking classes in Logic and English. Mabel was taught Logic by Archibald Bowman whom she later married. Their courtship and close relationship are revealed in their voluminous correspondence and in his diaries held by the University of Glasgow Archives and Special Collections. They had three children who all studied at the University of Glasgow too: Archibald, Mary and Alastair Bowman, who sadly died in the Second World War.
