Lawrence Weaver
Biography of Lawrence Weaver
Lawrence Trevelyan Weaver was appointed Reader in Human Nutrition in 1994, and two years later the Sampson Gemmell Professor of Child Health (1996-2011). With a scientific interest in nutrition acquired at the Dunn Nutrition Laboratory in Cambridge as a research fellow and then member of MRC scientific staff (1984-93), and with a clinical training in gastroenterology at Harvard as a Fulbright Scholar at the Children’s Hospital in Boston (1986-87), he developed a university department at Yorkhill where laboratory investigation was combined with medical practice. Through the development of doctoral and fellowship research programmes he strengthened the scientific base of clinical training in paediatric subspecialties.
He was educated at Clifton College, Bristol, at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge where he was a Smyth Exhibitioner, and at St Thomas’s Hospital Medical School. He was awarded the Lionel Whitby Medal for his MD in 1986 and a DSc in 2004 for his contributions to research in child health and nutrition. This focused on the use of stable isotopes to measure intestinal function, gut development, metabolism and bacterial infections.
Lawrence Weaver developed and maintained international links, with The Gambia where he had overseen the MRC’s clinical research programme at Keneba, with European colleagues who shared his medical and scientific interests within the European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition (of which was a council member), and with the World Health Organisation (WHO) for which he co-authored a monograph Feeding and Nutrition of Infants and Young Children (2000). He wrote and lectured widely, was secretary of the Paediatric Research Society and the author of over 200 clinical and scientific papers and book chapters on paediatrics and nutrition. Towards the end of his career at Glasgow he became an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for the History of Medicine, a member of the Wellcome Trust Funding Committee, and was awarded the Sydenham Medal by the Society of Apothecaries in 2007.
