Forrester Cockburn

Forrester Cockburn held the Samson Gemmell Chair of Child Health at the University of Glasgow from 1977 until 1996.

Educated at Leith Academy and the University of Edinburgh, Cockburn graduated MB ChB from the latter in 1959. He gained the Glasgow College Diploma in Child Health (DCH) in 1961 and in 1966 was awarded an MD (cum laude) by the University of Edinburgh.

Following graduation, he held appointments as house physician at the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh (RIE) and the Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion Edinburgh (SMMP). In 1961 he was appointed paediatric registrar at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children (RHSC) and SMMP, Edinburgh.

In 1963 he moved to the University of Boston and the Pediatric Clinical Research Center, Boston City Hospital, Massachusetts where he gained the ECFMG and held the Huntington-Hartford Research Fellowship in Pediatric Metabolic Disease. In 1965 he was appointed Visiting Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Department of Neonatal Physiology, University of Puerto Rico Medical School to work at The National Institute for Nervous Disease and Blindness (NINDB) on perinatal asphyxia for three months. He then spent a year at the Nuffield Institute for Medical Research (University of Oxford) as Nuffield Senior Research Fellow in Neonatal and Foetal Physiology.

In 1966 he returned to Edinburgh as a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow and held this post until appointed Senior Lecturer in the Department of Child Health at the University of Edinburgh in 1971.

Cockburn is now Emeritus Professor at the University of Glasgow. He was Chairman of Yorkhill NHS Trust from 1997 until 2001. He was awarded the CBE for services to Medicine and Children in 1996, the Honorary Fellowship and the James Spence Medal of the RCPCH in 1997/1998, the Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRSE-Hon) and of The Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE) in 1999. He has written and/or edited over 200 books and articles on fetal/neonatal nutrition and brain biochemistry, inherited metabolic diseases and ethics in paediatric research.
