Biography of Stanley Galbraith Graham

Stanley Galbraith Graham (1895-1975) joined the University in 1924 as Assistant to the Professor of Child Health. He was Leonard Gow Lecturer on the Medical Diseases of Infancy and Childhood (1930-47) and held the Samson Gemmell Chair of Child Health (1947-61).

Graham was the son of a Scottish doctor who had emigrated to Canada. He graduated MB from Toronto University in 1916. After serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the First World War, he studied paediatrics in Vienna. He then moved to Glasgow and worked with Professor Leonard Findlay. Findlay had just been appointed to the newly created Samson Gemmell Chair of Child Health.

In 1930 Graham was appointed to be in charge of his own wards in the Royal Hospital for Sick Children and the Glasgow Royal Maternity Hospital. His publications include the book Acidosis and Alkalosis (1933) which he co-authored with Noah Morris. In 1955 he was elected president of the British Paediatric Association, and he was president of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow 1954-56. He was awarded an honorary LLD by the University of Toronto in 1955.
