Frank William Saunders was born on the 1st July 1881 in Kingarth, Isle of Bute. He followed his father John's footsteps in becoming a minister, graduating MA in 1902 and BD in 1905. He had previously attended Rothesay Acadamy. While at Glasgow he studied a number of subjects including Latin, Greek, Moral Philosophy, Maths, English, Divinity, Church History and Biblical Criticism. He was awarded several class prizes for his studies pertaining to his Bachelor of Divinity.

He became minister of Anwoth Church in 1907 and married Katherine Helen Meiklejohn shortly afterwards. They had three children.
