Marion Young Reid

Biography of Marion Young Reid

Like her contemporary, Mary Fullarton Fyfe, Marion Young was a mature student when she took her LL.B. at Glasgow University. Born on 19th July 1882 to Jeanie and James Young she was 47 when she graduated in 1929. Her father was a shipbroker, a partner in the firm of Gillies & Reid and the family lived in Dumbuck, Old Kilpatrick. She would have known Mary Fullarton Fyfe, or Armour as she was then from the days when they were students in the Arts Faculty. They both graduated M.A. in 1907 and returned to study law in middle age. In the era before UCAS personal statements there is no way of knowing if either intended to seek a professional role but if they did they faced the insuperable double handicap of age and gender. Marion died of a stroke on 20th January 1966, aged 83.
