Biography of Sir John Burnett
Sir John Harrison Burnett was Regius Professor of Botany at the University from 1968 to 1970.
Burnett was a graduate of Merton College, Oxford who served in the RNVR during the Second World War and was mentioned in despatches. He was a lecturer at Lincoln College, 1948, and a Fellow at Magdalen, 1949 to 1953, before going to Liverpool in 1954 as a lecturer in Botany. He was Professor of Botany at the University of St Andrews from 1955 to 1960, at King's College, Newcastle from 1961 to 1963, and at the University of Newcastle from 1963 to 1968.
In 1970, Burnett left Glasgow to become Sibthorpian Professor of Rural Economy and Fellow of St John's College, Oxford. He was knighted in 1987.
