Biography of Alexander Dickson
Alexander Dickson (1836-1887) was Regius Professor of Botany from 1868 to 1879, when he was awarded an LLD.
A graduate of the University of Edinburgh (MD, 1860), Dickson also studied at Wurzburg and Berlin. He went into private practice as a physician in 1862, but shortly afterwards became deputy to the Professor of Botany at the University of Aberdeen. He was briefly Professor of Botany at Trinity College, Dublin, before his appointment to the Regius Chair at Glasgow in 1868.
Dickson left Glasgow in 1879 to become Regius Professor of Botany, Keeper of the Royal Botanic Garden and the Queen's Botanist at the University of Edinburgh.
