Biography of Alan Williamson
Alan Rowe Williamson was Gardiner Professor of Biochemistry at the University from 1974 to 1984.
Williamson studied at the University of Birmingham, graduating BSc (1958) and PhD (1961). He went to the USA as a post-doctoral Fellow, then returned to work in the National Institute for Medical Research in London. He was Director of Graduate Studies at the NIMR from 1970 until his appointment to the Gardiner Chair.
Williamson specialised in the field of immunology and went on to work in senior research management positions for companies such as Glaxo and Merck & Co.
