Biography of Robert Hamilton

Robert Hamilton (1714-1756) was Regius Professor of Botany and Anatomy, 1742 to 1756. He was briefly Regius Professor of Practice of Medicine in 1756.

Hamilton matriculated to study at the University in 1728 but there is no record that he graduated. In 1742 it was announced that he and John Crawfurd, a surgeon, would give lectures in Anatomy and Surgery at the University, and when Thomas Brisbane died later that year, Hamilton was appointed Regius Professor of Botany and Anatomy in his place.

In 1756, Hamilton was appointed to the Regius Chair of Practice of Medicine in succession to William Cullen, but he died shortly afterwards.

His son, also Robert Hamilton, was a benefactor of the University.
