John Black Cowan

John Black Cowan (1829-1896) was a University graduate and Regius Professor of Materia Medica at the University, 1865 to 1880. He was a Senate's Assessor, 1876 to 1880, and received an LLD in 1880.

Born in Glasgow, Cowan was the son of Robert, the first Professor of Forensic Medicine. He matriculated to study at the University in 1844, graduating MD in 1851, and then served as a Civil Surgeon in the Crimean War in the mid-1850s. He returned to Glasgow to become a lecturer at Anderson's College, before his appointment to the University Chair.
