Biography of Jane Reid Foulds Gilmour
Jane Reid Foulds Gilmour was born on 20 July 1878 in Duntocher, to Adam Gilmour who was a doctor in the area.
Jane followed in her father’s and her brother John’s footsteps, and she began studying medicine at the University of Glasgow graduating with M.B CH.B on 21 July 1903.
After graduating, Jane was jointly awarded a Diploma in Public Health by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1910.
On 20 September 1913, Jane married Dr Frank Charles Shrubsall after working with him in 1910 on the aetiology of rheumatism.
Jane then returned to the University of Glasgow, receiving her MD in October 1915. Her thesis was titled “On Some Characters Associated With Cases of Heart Disease in The Public Elementary Schools of London”, which has been digitised and is available on the University of Glasgow's Enlighten Website.
She continued to work as a doctor in London.
Jane Reid Foulds Gilmour died 7 July 1957 in Oxford.
