Daisy Annabelle Bennett was born on 10 January 1874, the daughter of Thomas, a wine merchant. She first attended the University of Glasgow in 1892 to study medicine, and was among the first group of women to attend the University after women were first permitted to do so in 1892. According to her matriculation record for her first year, she lived in Netherwood, Albert Road, Langside, Glasgow. After studying the full medical syllabus, she graduated on 21 July 1898.

Daisy returned to the University of Glasgow, and began working towards a MD straight after graduation. Her thesis 'Aetiology and treatment of oophoritis' was submitted in October 1900, and her MD was conferred on 3 November 1904.

Daisy married Andrew Nicholson McGregor, also a University of Glasgow graduate, in Cathcart on 7 March 1899, so her thesis was awarded under her married name, Daisy Annabelle McGregor. She had a daughter in the years following submission of her thesis, hence the delay in graduating.
