James Morgan
Biography of James Morgan
James Morgan was born 15 June 1799 at Cookstown, co. Tyrone, Ireland, the second son of Thomas Morgan and Maria Collins. He matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1814 but his graduation date is unknown.
James was licensed to preach in 1820 and became the minister at Carlow on 21 September 1820. From 1824-1828 he was the minister at Lisburn and on 4 Nov 1828 became the first minister at Fisherwick Place, Belfast, Ireland. He remained with that congregation until his death on 5 August 1873.
In 1847 he was given the degree of Doctor of Divinity by the University of Glasgow. His ministerial focus was on out-reach within the church and to the unchurched. He was active in the founding of the Presbyterian College. James married in 1823 at Lisburn, Charlotte Gayer, daughter of John Gayer and Olivia Henderson. They had six children of whom two sons, Thomas and William were Presbyterian ministers.
