Biography of Ian Thompson
Ian Bentley Thompson was Professor of Geography at the University, 1976 to 1998, and is an Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Geographical and Earth Sciences.
Thompson graduated BA from the University of Durham in 1957 and, as a Fulbright scholar, graduated MA from Indiana University. He was a tutor at the University of Durham and then assistant lecturer at Leeds, graduating PhD in 1960. In 1961 he was appointed Lecturer in Geography at the University of Southampton, becoming Senior Lecturer and Reader, and developed teaching and research interests in the economic, social and regional geography of France. He published Modern France: A Social and Economic Geography in 1970.
