William Walker Chambers was William Jacks Professor of Modern Languages from 1954 to 1979. He was Dean of Faculties from 1984 until his death.

Educated at Wishaw High School, Chambers graduated MA from the University in 1936 and went on to study in Paris and Munich. He served in the Royal Artillery during the Second World War, was mentioned in despatches and awarded an MBE, and was attached to the Intelligence Staff of the 8th Army, 1942 to 1946. He was briefly a lecturer in German at the University of Leeds before returning to Glasgow as a lecturer in 1947. He was Professor of Languages at University College, North Staffordshire from 1950 until his appointment to the William Jacks Chair in Glasgow.

Chambers was President of the Association of University Teachers, 1962 to 1963, and Vice-Chairman of Governors of Jordanhill College of Education, 1962 to 1967. Among his publications were (with John R Wilkie) A Short History of the German Language (1970).
