Biography of Malcolm McLeod

Malcolm Donald McLeod (1941- ) was Director of the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, 1990 to 1999; Professor of African Studies from 1994 to 2006; Vice-Principal from 1999 to 2005 and Pro Vice-Principal from 2005 to 2006. He was awarded a CBE in 2006.

McLeod read History and then Social Anthropology at Oxford, graduating MA and BLitt. He taught and carried out research in Ghana before returning to Cambridge to teach Anthropology. In 1974 he was appointed Keeper of Ethnography at the British Museum and ran the Museum of Mankind there until 1990, when he moved to Glasgow. He became Chairman of the Caledonian Foundation in the USA in 2003 and a trustee of National Museums Scotland in 2005.
