Biography of Archibald Duncan
Archibald Alexander McBeth (Archie) Duncan (1926-2017) was Professor of Scottish History from 1962 to 1993. He was Clerk of Senate from 1978 to 1983 and Dean of Faculties from 1998 until 2000.
Educated at George Heriot's School and at Balliol College, Oxford, Duncan became a lecturer in History at Queen's University, Belfast in 1951 and at the University of Edinburgh from 1953 to 1961. He was a Leverhulme Fellow in 1961-1962. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1979.
