Biography of James Maitland 7th Earl of Lauderdale

James Maitland, 7th Earl of Lauderdale (1718-1789) was Rector of the University from 1779 to 1781.

Maitland was a soldier for twenty-five years and attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the 16th Regiment of Foot. He was one of the sixteen representative peers for Scotland in the House of Lords. He died at Haltoun House, Ratho, Midlothian.
