Biography of John Hamilton Dalrymple 10th Earl of Stair
John Hamilton Dalrymple, 10th Earl of Stair (1819-1903) was University Chancellor from 1884 to 1903.
Stair was a descendent of John Dalrymple, an important figure in the Scottish Reformation, and of the great Scottish jurist Sir James Dalrymple, 1st Viscount Stair. He was MP for Wigtownshire from 1841 to 1856 and Lord High Commissioner to the Church of Scotland from 1869 to 1871. From 1870 to 1903 he was the Governor of the Bank of Scotland.
The other candidates nominated for Chancellor at the meeting of the General Council on 29 October 1884 were the Marquis of Bute, the Marquis of Lorne, Lord Reay and Lord Balfour.
