Gregory Edward (known as Greg) Hemphill is a graduate of the University who was Rector from 2001 until 2004.

Born in Glasgow, Hemphill was raised in Canada. He studied in the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies, graduating MA in 1992. He became a stand-up comedian and actor, and achieved fame as a star of the BBC Scotland comedies Chewin' the Fat and Still Game.

Hemphill defeated the author Alistair Gray, comedienne Karen Dunbar and the musician Stuart Murdoch in the rectorial election in 2001.
