Biography of Edward George Geoffrey Smith Stanley 14th Earl of Derby
Edward George Geoffrey Smith Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby, was Rector of the University from 1834 to 1836.
Born in Knowsley Hall in Lancashire, Stanley was educated at Eton and Christ's Church, Oxford. He entered politics as a Whig and held a number of Government offices - as Colonial Secretary he is best remembered for drawing up the Abolition of Slavery Bill which became law in 1833. He inherited the title Lord Stanley in 1834 and the family's earldom in 1851.
The University students may have thought they had elected a Whig as Rector in 1834, but at Stanley's installation on 21 December 1834 he outlined a new, more conservative political creed that moved him closer to the Tories. He served as a Conservative Prime Minister on three occasions in the 1850s and 1860s.
