Biography of Lindsay Anderson Summers

Lindsay Anderson Summers (1930-2012), the Industrial Chemist, studied here at the University of Glasgow. A distinguished student, he obtained a First Class Honours BSc in 1952 before studying for a PhD, which he completed in 1956. Dr. Summers specialised in the study of high explosives and pesticides.

Upon qualifying, he worked for two years in the Nobel Division of ICI in Ayrshire, Scotland, researching high explosives and then, from 1958, joined the company’s Jeilott's Hill Research Station (part of the agricultural research division) to work on pesticides, insecticides and fungicides.

Wishing to return to university life, Dr. Summers migrated to Australia in 1964, where he joined the Chemistry Department of the University of Newcastle and became Associate Professor. He also became an associate of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute and a fellow of the Chemical Society of London.

Lindsay Anderson Summers was very well published with 160 papers in learned journals and a book by Academic Press. He was awarded the 1981 Archibald D. Olle Prize by the New South Wales branch of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute for his book: The Bipyridinium Herbicides.

Dr. Summers spent the last eleven years of his life in Canberra and died there on the 23rd March 2012.

He remained interested in the news from the University of Glasgow during his life and read the copies of ‘Avenue’, posted out to him in Australia, with interest.
