Biography of James Hiddleston
James Hiddleston studied Engineering and graduated with a BSc in 1940.
James Hiddleston was born on the 30th August 1915 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and was the son of John and Helen Hiddleston. His father was a woollen merchant.
James started studying at the University of Glasgow in 1934, at the age of 19. In his first year he took classes in Mathematics, Chemistry and Applied Physics. Maths proved to be a struggle for him, and though resits resulted in him deferring for a year, by 1937 he was back on track, taking classes in Higher Mathematics, General Engineering, and Drawing. In his final two years he took classes in Engineering, and graduated on the 19th October 1940 with a BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Upon completion of his degree, James worked as an Engineer, before joining the Royal Navy, where he was made a Lieutenant. While serving aboard the cruiser HMS Curacao, the ship was in a collision with RMS Queen Mary. Hiddleston was killed on 2nd October 1942 when the ship sank, along with 337 others.
James is remembered on the Chatham Naval Memorial, as well as the University of Glasgow Roll of Honour.
