Flight Sergeant George Hamilton of the RAFVR was born in Glasgow and attended the High School of Glasgow. In 1933 he matriculated at the University to study for an Arts degree, but left after one year to train as a Chartered Accountant and qualified in 1940.

Hamilton joined the RAF that year, trained in Canada as a navigator, and returned to Britain to serve with Coastal Command. He was a member of the crew of a Sunderland flying boat which was reported missing on a patrol over the Bay of Biscay on 15 December 1942, and he was reported missing, presumed lost in action.
