Surgeon Lieutenant William Boyd was born in Glasgow and graduated MB, ChB from the University in 1932. He was declared missing presumed killed on 26 October 1940, when the cruise liner Empress of Britain, requisitioned as a troopship, was crippled in a German bomber attack. The ship was subsequently sunk by torpedoes fired from a U-Boat.
