Walter Bunch

Biography of Walter Bunch

Walter Bunch (fl 1475-1478) was a regent and Principal of the University from 1475 to 1478.

Walter was a Cistercian monk of Balmerino who came from a leading mercantile family in Perth. He is believed to have been a kinsman, possibly the nephew, of his predecessor as Principal, Duncan Bunch. Like him, he had studied at the University of Cologne and it is possible that he was given the post of Principal Regent because of his relationship with Duncan. When Walter was appointed to the function, he was also the Prior of Balmerino’s establishment of Gadvan, in the parish of Dunbog. He held both posts until June 1478, when complaints of incompetence and disinterest led to his dismissal as Principal Regent.

He stayed Prior of Dunbog until 1482/3, when he was provided with the abbacy of Balmerino, although his position as the Abbot was only secured in 1486. He held his title until the late 15th century or early 16th.
