Biography of Sir George Husband Baird MacLeod

Sir George Husband Baird Macleod (1828-1892) was Regius Professor of Surgery at the University from 1869 to 1892. The MacLeod Medal and Prize are named for him.

Born in Campsie, the son of the famous minister Norman, MacLeod studied Medicine at the University (graduating MD in 1853) and at Paris and Vienna before serving as a surgeon at a hospital in Smyrna in Turkey during the Crimean War. He went into private practice in Glasgow in 1856 and became a lecturer in Surgery at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary Medical College, and in Military Surgery at Anderson's College. In 1869 he succeeded Joseph Lister as Regius Professor of Surgery at the University. Macleod was also the first Senior Surgeon of the Western Infirmary.

Macleod was Surgeon-in-Ordinary to the Queen and was knighted in 1887.
