Biography of John Hunter

John Hunter (1728-1793) was a surgeon and anatomist, and brother of William Hunter (1718-1783), the founder of the Hunterian Museum. The John Hunter Medals in Biological Science are named for him.

After William Hunter became a surgeon and anatomist in London, he employed his brother as his assistant. John served as an army surgeon in 1760 to 1763 and became a prominent surgeon in London after returning to civilian life, with his own anatomy school. He was appointed Surgeon to King George III in 1776, and Surgeon General in 1789.
