James Graham, Marquess of Montrose

James Graham (1612-1650), 5th Earl and 1st Marquess of Montrose, was educated in Glasgow before attending the University of St Andrews. He gave 400 marks to the University's building fund during the 1630s.

Montrose fought initially for the Covenanters and then for the Royalists (as the King's Lieutenant in Scotland) during the bitter civil wars of the 1630s and 1640s. He was captured after the Battle of Carbisdale and sentenced to death by hanging.
